Musk says he was misquoted in reports of a China Tesla factory Getty Images Tesla will still be making these in the U.S.Tesla Motors Inc. all-electric cars will still be made in the U.S., Chief Executive Elon Musk tweeted over the weekend. At a forum at a Chinese university last week, Musk was quoted as saying TeslaTSLA, -2.28% would produce electric cars in China within two years. Not so fast, Musk said via Twitter. A factory in China could come after Tesla launches the Model 3, its proposed mass-market electric car, Musk said. Tesla recently expanded its Tilburg, Netherlands, assembly plant, which serves as final assembly factory and distribution point for Teslas sold in Europe. Musk frequently posts on Twitter, and a lot of it is about Tesla. Last month Musk broke news via a tweet that Tesla’s Model 3 will cost $35,000 and be available for preorders in March. Earlier this month, he tweeted to defend the company’s cars after Consumer Reports magazine gave Teslas a worse-than-average reliability score and said it couldn’t recommend the car. In another recent tweet, he asked users what features they’d like to see in a next software update (most wanted to access to music services and third-party apps). After his first tweet about China, Musk engaged in a question-and-answer session of sorts with some of his followers. If Tesla were to establish a factory in India, he said, it would probably make more sense for it to be a battery factory, he said. Responding to one person asking about Teslas in Mexico, he said Tesla is establishing charging and service infrastructure before launching there in the next “several months.” Tesla might head to South America in mid- to late 2016, Musk said.
